SERP (Search Engine Results Page)
What is SERP (Search Engine Results Page)?
A SERP, or search engine results page, is the page a search engine shows in response to a query. Modern Google SERPs mix classic organic results with many other elements: ads, AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, local map packs, image and video carousels, shopping results, knowledge panels and more.
The layout differs by query, location, device and user, so two people searching the same phrase can see different SERPs. Analysing what appears on the SERP for a keyword reveals what kind of content search engines currently consider the best answer.
Why it matters for SEO
Your ranking position only tells part of the story; the features around it decide how visible you really are. A number-one organic result can sit below ads, an AI Overview and a map pack. Studying the SERP helps you choose the right format and target the features you can win.
Example
Before writing about "how to descale a kettle", a writer checks the SERP and finds a featured snippet listing steps, a video carousel and a People Also Ask box. They structure the article as numbered steps, answer two of the PAA questions under their own headings and embed a short video.
