Keyword Clustering
What is Keyword Clustering?
Keyword clustering is the process of grouping keywords that share the same search intent so they can be targeted by a single page, rather than creating a separate page for each variation. The most reliable method compares search results: if two keywords return largely the same ranking URLs, Google treats them as the same topic and one page can rank for both.
Clusters then become the building blocks of a content plan, with each cluster mapped to one page and related clusters linked together around a pillar page.
Why it matters for SEO
Clustering prevents keyword cannibalization, where several of your own pages compete for the same query, and it avoids wasting effort on near-duplicate articles. It also produces fewer, stronger pages that each rank for dozens of related long-tail variations.
Example
An accounting firm has a list including "how to file self assessment", "self assessment tax return guide" and "how do I do my tax return online UK". The top results for all three are nearly identical, so they become one cluster and one comprehensive guide. "Self assessment deadline", which returns different results, gets its own short page.
