Long-Tail Keyword
What is Long-Tail Keyword?
A long-tail keyword is a specific, usually longer search query with relatively low individual search volume, such as "waterproof hiking boots for wide feet" instead of "hiking boots". The name comes from the shape of a search demand curve: a few head terms get huge volume, while a very long tail of specific queries each get little, yet together they make up a large share of all searches.
Long-tail queries tend to reveal clearer intent and face less competition, because fewer pages are written to answer them precisely.
Why it matters for SEO
Long-tail keywords are where new and smaller sites can rank first. Their specific intent often converts better, and covering many related long-tail questions builds the topical depth that helps a site compete for broader head terms over time.
Example
A local bike shop cannot outrank national retailers for "road bikes", but it writes a guide titled "Best road bike tyres for wet winter commuting". The query has few monthly searches, yet the people who search it are ready to buy tyres, and the shop can realistically rank in the top three.
