Keyword Difficulty
What is Keyword Difficulty?
Keyword difficulty (KD) is an estimate, usually on a 0 to 100 scale, of how hard it would be to rank on the first page of Google for a keyword. It is a metric invented by SEO tool vendors, not by Google, and each vendor calculates it differently: some weight the number of referring domains pointing at the current top results, others blend in authority scores, content signals or SERP features.
Because the formulas differ, the same keyword can score very differently in two tools. KD is best used to compare keywords within one tool, and always alongside a manual look at who actually ranks.
Why it matters for SEO
Difficulty helps a site pick battles it can win. A new domain chasing high-difficulty terms may wait a long time for any traffic, while lower-difficulty, intent-matched keywords can bring results sooner and build the authority needed for harder terms later.
Example
A new pet-supplies store sees "dog food" with a very high difficulty score and pages from national retailers in the top ten. "Grain-free food for senior dachshunds" scores low and the current results include forum threads and thin category pages. The store writes a detailed guide for the second query first.
