Content Cluster

What is Content Cluster?

A content cluster (also called a topic cluster) is a group of interlinked web pages that collectively cover a broad topic and all its related subtopics. The cluster consists of a central pillar page that provides a high-level overview of the topic, surrounded by multiple cluster pages that each explore a specific subtopic in depth. All cluster pages link back to the pillar, and the pillar links out to each cluster page.

This architecture creates a tightly interconnected web of content that signals topical depth and authority to search engines. Each cluster page targets long-tail variations of the main topic, collectively capturing a broad range of search queries. The internal linking pattern distributes authority throughout the cluster and makes crawling and indexing more efficient.

Why it matters for SEO

Content clusters are the structural implementation of topical authority strategy. They allow a site to dominate an entire subject area in search results, capturing traffic at every stage of the buyer's journey while building the cumulative authority that helps individual pages rank more competitively.

Example

A project-management SaaS builds a cluster around "remote team management". The pillar page gives an overview, and linked cluster articles cover "running async stand-ups", "remote onboarding checklists", "time-zone scheduling" and "tools for remote teams". Every cluster article links back to the pillar and to one or two siblings, forming a clear topic group.
