Open Graph

What is Open Graph?

Open Graph is a set of HTML meta tags, introduced by Facebook in 2010, that control how a page looks when it is shared as a link on social networks and messaging apps. The core tags are og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url, and og:type describes the kind of content. X (Twitter) has its own twitter: card tags but falls back to Open Graph when they are missing.

Without Open Graph tags, platforms guess, often picking the wrong image or truncating the wrong text. A 1200 by 630 pixel image is the widely recommended size for large link previews.

Why it matters for SEO

Open Graph tags are not a Google ranking factor, but they decide whether a shared link looks trustworthy and clickable in LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, Facebook and X. Better previews earn more clicks and shares, which drives traffic and brand visibility that can lead to links and mentions.

Example

A blog post shared in Slack showed the site logo cropped badly and the cookie banner text as its description. After adding og:title, a 155-character og:description and og:image pointing to a 1200x630 banner, the same link now unfurls with a clear headline, summary and image.
