Keyword Density

Keyword density refers to the percentage of times a target keyword appears in a piece of content relative to the total word count. Historically, SEOs aimed for specific density thresholds, but modern search engines are sophisticated enough that mechanical repetition of keywords does more harm than good. Natural language usage is far more important than hitting a numerical target.

A healthy approach is to use the primary keyword where it fits organically — in the title, first paragraph, a heading, and a few times throughout the body — while relying on related terms and synonyms to provide semantic context. Overusing a keyword to artificially inflate density is considered keyword stuffing and can trigger ranking penalties.

Why it matters for SEO

While keyword density is no longer a reliable optimization metric on its own, maintaining a natural keyword presence ensures search engines correctly associate the page with its target topic. Monitoring density helps catch both under-optimization and over-optimization before they affect rankings.
