What is Content Freshness?
Content freshness refers to how recently a piece of content was published or updated and how relevant it remains to current search queries. Google's Query Deserves Freshness (QDF) algorithm boosts fresher content for queries where recency matters — such as news events, product releases, trend-driven topics, and time-sensitive questions. For evergreen content, freshness is less critical but still a positive signal.
Updating existing content — adding new data, correcting outdated information, expanding thin sections, or reflecting recent developments — can re-signal freshness to Google without the need to create a new URL. This practice, often called a content refresh, is one of the most efficient ways to recover declining organic traffic on pages that were once strong performers.
Why it matters for SEO
Fresh content is rewarded for queries where recency is a user expectation, and even for evergreen topics, regular updates signal active maintenance and ongoing expertise. Neglecting content freshness leads to content decay, where pages gradually lose rankings as competitors publish more current information.
Example
A post titled "Best Project Management Tools" was written two years ago; several tools have since changed their pricing and one has shut down. Updating the prices, removing the discontinued product, adding a newer option, and changing the visible "last updated" date (and the dateModified in its Article schema) makes the page accurate again for people researching tools today.
