Average Position
Average position is a metric in Google Search Console that reports the mean ranking position of a URL or domain for a given query or set of queries over a specified time period. If a page ranks in position 2 for one query and position 8 for another, its average position for those two queries would be 5.
Average position is a useful trend indicator but requires careful interpretation. Because it averages across all queries a page ranks for — including very long-tail terms where rankings may be very high or very low — the aggregate number can be misleading. Segmenting by query cluster or filtering to specific keywords provides more actionable insights.
Why it matters for SEO
Average position is one of the primary KPIs for tracking SEO progress over time. Improvements in average position for target keywords directly correlate with increases in impressions and CTR. Monitoring position alongside CTR and impressions in Google Search Console allows SEOs to diagnose whether traffic changes are driven by ranking shifts, CTR changes, or SERP feature interference.
