Dwell Time
Dwell time is the length of time a user spends on a webpage after clicking on a search result before returning to the SERP. It is distinct from session duration (which measures time across the entire visit) and from time-on-page (a standard analytics metric). Dwell time is specifically the elapsed time between the SERP click and the back-button action.
Google has not officially confirmed dwell time as a ranking signal, but it is widely theorized to function as a quality signal. Long dwell times suggest that a page satisfied the user's intent effectively. Short dwell times — sometimes called "pogo-sticking" when users immediately return to the SERP and click another result — may indicate content quality problems.
Why it matters for SEO
Even if dwell time is not a direct algorithmic signal, optimizing for it aligns with optimizing for user satisfaction, which is what search engines ultimately reward. Improving content depth, readability, multimedia integration, and page load speed all contribute to longer engagement — which also tends to correlate with better rankings and lower bounce rates.
