Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who complete a desired action on a website — such as making a purchase, submitting a lead form, signing up for a newsletter, or downloading a resource — relative to the total number of visitors. It is calculated as conversions divided by sessions (or unique visitors) multiplied by 100.

In the context of SEO, conversion rate is the bridge between traffic and business outcomes. Driving organic traffic has limited value if that traffic does not convert at a meaningful rate. Conversion rate optimization (CRO) and SEO are increasingly treated as complementary disciplines because improvements in page relevance, content quality, and user experience benefit both.

Why it matters for SEO

Conversion rate determines the revenue yield of organic traffic. A page attracting 10,000 monthly visitors with a 0.5% conversion rate produces fewer conversions than a page with 3,000 visitors and a 2% conversion rate. Tracking conversion rate by landing page and keyword group helps identify which organic segments are generating actual business value versus raw traffic volume.
