Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that systems which return a direct answer, rather than a list of links, can find, extract and cite it. Answer engines include featured snippets and AI Overviews in Google, voice assistants, and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

In practice AEO means asking the questions your audience asks as headings, answering each one plainly in the first sentence or two beneath it, then adding supporting detail. It overlaps heavily with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO); AEO is the older term, rooted in featured snippets and voice search, while GEO is usually used for LLM-powered search.

Why it matters for SEO

A growing share of searches end with an answer shown directly on the results page or inside an AI assistant. Content that states answers clearly and accurately is easier to quote, which keeps a brand visible even when fewer users click through, and can still earn the click from people who need more depth.

Example

A heating company's article includes the H2 "How often should a boiler be serviced?" followed immediately by "Most manufacturers recommend servicing a gas boiler once a year, and many warranties require it." Details about what a service includes come afterwards. That opening sentence is short and self-contained enough to be lifted into a featured snippet or an AI answer.
