Query Fan-Out
What is Query Fan-Out?
Query fan-out is a technique used by AI search systems where a single user question is broken into several related sub-queries that are searched in parallel, and the results are combined into one answer. Google has described its AI Mode as using query fan-out, and other AI assistants with web search use similar approaches when they issue multiple searches for one prompt.
For example, a question about choosing a laptop for video editing might fan out into searches about recommended processors, RAM requirements, display colour accuracy and current models in a price range.
Why it matters for SEO
Fan-out means an AI answer can cite pages that rank for the sub-queries, not only the original question. Content that clearly addresses the component questions around a topic, each under its own descriptive heading, has more opportunities to be retrieved and cited.
Example
For the prompt "plan a 3-day trip to Lisbon with kids", an AI system might separately search for family-friendly attractions, where to stay, public transport with a pushchair and day trips from Lisbon. A travel blog with a clear section on "Getting around Lisbon with a stroller" can be cited for that sub-query even if it does not rank for the full prompt.
