Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing web content to be cited and referenced by AI-powered search engines and large language model-based tools, such as Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT. Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking in a list of blue links, GEO focuses on becoming the source that AI systems draw upon when synthesizing answers.

GEO strategies emphasize authoritative, factually dense content with clear sourcing, strong E-E-A-T signals, structured data, and entity clarity. Content that directly and comprehensively answers specific questions is more likely to be retrieved and cited by retrieval-augmented generation systems, making topical depth and answer completeness critical signals.
