Faceted Navigation (E-commerce)

Faceted navigation allows shoppers to filter a product catalog by attributes such as size, color, price range, or brand, dynamically generating new URLs with each filter combination. While excellent for user experience, this creates massive amounts of near-duplicate pages that can overwhelm crawl budget and dilute link equity.

Managing faceted navigation for SEO requires a deliberate strategy: using canonical tags to point filter combinations back to the parent category, applying noindex to parameter-based URLs with no search demand, and selectively allowing indexing of facets that represent genuine standalone keyword opportunities. Proper robots.txt and parameter handling in Google Search Console are also essential.
