What is Category Page SEO?
Category Page SEO is the practice of optimizing e-commerce category or collection pages to rank for broad, high-volume keywords that represent a product group, such as "running shoes" or "office chairs." These pages aggregate multiple products and sit above individual product pages in the site hierarchy.
Effective category page SEO involves optimizing the title tag, meta description, and H1 with primary keywords, adding descriptive introductory copy, implementing breadcrumb and structured data markup, and ensuring strong internal linking to and from subcategory and product pages. Pagination and faceted navigation must also be handled correctly to avoid duplicate content.
Why it matters for SEO
Category pages usually target the broadest, highest-volume keywords in an e-commerce site's hierarchy, which makes them among the most valuable pages for organic traffic. Ranking one category page for a broad term can often bring more qualified visitors than many individual product pages.
Example
An office furniture store's /office-chairs/ page used to have only a product grid and the title "Office Chairs | Shop". The team rewrites the title to "Office Chairs: Ergonomic, Mesh & Executive | Deskly", adds a 150-word intro on how to choose a chair, links to the mesh and ergonomic subcategories, and adds BreadcrumbList markup. The page now has unique text to rank with, not just a list of product names.
