Noindex is a directive that instructs search engines not to include a specific page in their search index. It can be implemented via a meta robots tag (`<meta name="robots" content="noindex">`) in the page's `<head>`, or via an `X-Robots-Tag` HTTP response header. Pages with a noindex directive can still be crawled but will not appear in search results.

Noindex is appropriate for pages that exist for operational reasons but should not compete in search — such as thank-you pages, login pages, internal search results, staging environments, and low-quality or thin pages. It is a more surgical tool than blocking via robots.txt because crawlers still visit the page and respect the directive, rather than being blocked from reading it entirely.

Using noindex strategically prevents low-quality or irrelevant pages from diluting a site's overall index quality, which can improve how Google evaluates the site as a whole. It also conserves crawl budget by discouraging re-crawling of pages that serve no search visibility purpose.
