Technical SEO
Orphan Page
What is Orphan Page?
An orphan page is a page on a website that no other page on the same site links to. Visitors can only reach it by knowing the URL, following an external link or finding it in search results, and crawlers can only discover it through an XML sitemap or external links.
Orphan pages usually appear by accident: a landing page built for a campaign, an old article dropped from the navigation during a redesign, or pages generated by a CMS that were never added to menus or category pages.
Why it matters for SEO
Internal links are how search engines discover pages and judge their importance. Orphan pages receive none of that signal, so they tend to be crawled rarely and rank poorly even when their content is good. Finding and linking them from relevant pages is one of the quickest technical SEO wins.
Example
An audit compares the URLs in a site's XML sitemap with the URLs found by crawling from the homepage. Twelve guides appear in the sitemap but are never reached by the crawl. The team adds each guide to the relevant category hub and links to it from two related articles.
