Index Bloat
What is Index Bloat?
Index bloat is when a search engine indexes many more pages from a site than the site actually wants in search: low-value URLs such as filter and sort combinations, internal search results, tag archives, thin auto-generated pages, parameter duplicates or old test pages.
It is usually spotted by comparing the number of indexed pages reported in Google Search Console with the number of pages the site intends to rank, and by looking for URL patterns that should not be there.
Why it matters for SEO
Bloat spends crawl budget on pages nobody should land on, can split signals across duplicates, and makes it harder for search engines to judge the site's overall quality. Cleaning it up with noindex, canonical tags, robots.txt rules, consolidation or deletion helps important pages get crawled and indexed reliably.
Example
A fashion store has around 2,000 products, but Search Console shows tens of thousands of indexed URLs. Most are combinations like "/dresses?color=red&size=m&sort=price". The store adds canonical tags pointing filtered views to the main category, noindexes internal search pages and stops linking to sort parameters.
