What is Backlink?

A backlink is a hyperlink on an external website that points to a page on your site. Backlinks serve as one of the foundational ranking signals in Google's algorithm, operating on the principle that a link from another site represents a vote of confidence in the linked content. Not all backlinks carry equal weight — links from authoritative, topically relevant domains pass significantly more ranking influence than links from low-quality or unrelated sources.

Backlinks are evaluated by both their source quality and the anchor text used. A backlink profile with diverse, naturally earned links from reputable domains is a strong positive signal, while an unnatural profile dominated by low-quality or manipulative links can trigger manual penalties or algorithmic devaluation. Building a strong backlink profile is the primary objective of off-page SEO.

Why it matters for SEO

Despite decades of algorithm updates, backlinks remain an important ranking signal in Google's algorithm, though Google has said in recent years that they matter less than they once did relative to content quality. A page with strong backlinks from authoritative domains will consistently outrank thinner or less-linked competitors, all else being equal.

Example

A small accounting firm publishes a free guide to self-employed tax deadlines. A regional business news site writes about tax season and includes the sentence "a handy checklist from Smith & Co explains each deadline", with the words "handy checklist" linking to the firm's guide. That hyperlink is a backlink for the firm: an external, editorially placed reference pointing to a specific page on its domain.
