Navigational Intent

Navigational intent describes queries where the user is trying to reach a specific website, page, or brand — using search as a navigation tool rather than an information-discovery tool. A user searching "Facebook login" or "Airbnb customer support" already knows their destination and is simply using the search bar as a shortcut to get there. Navigational queries almost always favor the target brand's own site in the results.

For SEO strategy, navigational queries for your own brand are a signal of brand health — high branded search volume indicates strong awareness and loyalty. Navigational queries for competitors can present opportunities if you intercept them with comparison or alternative content. However, attempting to rank for a competitor's pure brand navigational queries is difficult and often violates advertising policies if done through paid search.

Why it matters for SEO

Branded navigational queries are a measure of brand equity and a source of reliable, high-converting organic traffic. Protecting your rankings for your own brand navigational queries — and monitoring competitors' brand terms for content opportunities — is a valuable component of a comprehensive search strategy.
