Local Citation

A local citation is any online mention of a business's NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) information. Citations appear on business directories, social platforms, review sites, local chamber of commerce websites, industry-specific directories, and data aggregators. They can be structured (appearing in a formal directory profile) or unstructured (appearing naturally within a piece of content, such as a blog post mentioning the business).

Local citations serve two functions: they validate a business's existence and location to search engines, and they provide additional discovery pathways for potential customers. The volume and quality of citations, combined with their NAP accuracy, are long-established local ranking factors that influence a business's ability to appear in local pack and map results.

Why it matters for SEO

Citations function as trust signals in local SEO — they tell search engines that a business is real, established, and located where it claims to be. Businesses with more consistent citations across authoritative directories tend to rank better in local packs. Building citations on high-authority platforms (like Yelp, TripAdvisor, or industry-specific directories) also generates referral traffic and brand visibility beyond search.
