Trustworthiness is the central pillar of E-E-A-T and refers to the overall reliability, honesty, and safety of a website and its content. Google's Quality Raters assess trust through signals such as accurate information, transparent authorship, clear disclosure of commercial relationships, secure HTTPS connections, accessible contact information, and a positive reputation outside of the site itself.
Sites that publish misleading information, hide their ownership, use deceptive design patterns, or lack basic transparency signals score poorly on trustworthiness. For e-commerce sites, customer reviews, clear return policies, and secure payment signals all contribute. Trustworthiness is considered the most critical of the E-E-A-T dimensions.
Why it matters for SEO
Google explicitly identifies trustworthiness as the most important element of E-E-A-T. Sites that fail basic trust signals — transparent ownership, accurate content, HTTPS, visible contact details — are systematically penalized in quality evaluations, making trustworthiness a prerequisite for competitive rankings on any topic.
